Richard Rosen and Andrew Gowdown Speak at Traumatic Brain Injury Symposium
On November 19, 2011 Richard S. Rosen and Andrew D. Gowdown spoke at the Traumatic Brain Injury Symposium held at the Medical University of South Carolina. Rosen and Gowdown presented information to over 100 health care professionals about the legal issues facing Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) survivors and their families.
The day began with introductory remarks by Dr. Nancey Tsai, M.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at MUSC. She then gave an overview of the diagnostics and treatment of TBI. She presented several facts about TBI, including that approximately 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries occur every year in the US, with about 52,000 being deaths. Dr. Jonathan C. Edwards, M.D., Professor, Department of Neuroscience at MUSC, and Director of the MUSC Epilepsy Center, discussed TBI as it related to injuries in sports. This is a timely topic as everyone from local coaches to the NFL is becoming more aware of the prevalence of concussions in sports and the seriousness of these injuries.
After Rosen and Gowdown spoke, Dr. Randy Raid, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor in Psychiatry/Neurology at MUSC and a private practitioner, presented on the “Neuropsychological Assessment and Treatment in Traumatic Brain Injury.”
