About Traumatic Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury (often called TBI) is damage to the brain caused by an external physical force. The damage is often caused by movement of the brain within the skull or by penetration of an object into the skull contacting the brain directly.
Traumatic brain injury can result in coma, paralysis, cognitive dysfunction, physical impairment or psychological disturbance. People who have experienced a concussion and related brain damage often suffer from headaches, sleep disturbance, decreased concentration and attention span, sensitivity to noise or light, nausea, memory problems, depression or anxiety.
The terms mild, moderate and severe are often used to describe a brain injury. However, the severity of the injury is not always an indication of how significant the consequences will be. We understand that people who have even "mild" traumatic brain injuries often suffer life-altering consequences.
